A small tool for a simpler portrait

A free, browser-based portrait background remover with a straightforward PNG download.

Clearcut helps you remove the background from one portrait, inspect the result and save it with transparency or a selected color. You do not need a Clearcut account, subscription or image credits.

How it works

The page downloads an open-source image model and processes your selected photo in browser memory. It uses MODNet for portrait matting and ONNX Runtime Web for local inference. A background worker keeps model processing separate from the page controls.

What we tested

Before release, the sample portrait and a public-domain NASA portrait were processed in a desktop browser. Saved transparent and white-background PNGs were checked, along with cancellation, damaged-file recovery and a narrow-screen layout. This is a bounded functional test, not a guarantee across every browser, phone or portrait.

Limits and credits

The maximum download size is 2,048 pixels on the longest side. Difficult hair, fabric and backgrounds may need manual cleanup. The demonstration portrait is AI-generated and is placed onto an opaque backdrop before the sample button runs the real remover.

MODNet is used under the Apache 2.0 license. ONNX Runtime Web 1.22.0 uses its MIT license. The ONNX weights are from Xenova/modnet.
