Give a portrait a clean white background

Replace a portrait backdrop with white and save a new PNG without changing the original file.

A plain white backdrop is useful for a team profile, presentation or personal design. Clearcut estimates the person’s outline, then places the cutout over solid white. It does not repaint the face, relight the person or turn a blurred photograph into a sharp headshot.

Change the background

  1. Open the free portrait background remover and choose a clear photo with one person.
  2. Wait for background removal to finish. The original remains on your device.
  3. Select the white background circle. The preview should show the person on white.
  4. Use the comparison slider to check the face, shoulders, hair and clothing.
  5. Choose Download PNG. Keep the original separately for future edits.

White clothing and light hair need a closer look

When a shirt, pale hair or bright reflection resembles the original backdrop, the model may confuse part of the person with the background. White output makes some errors harder to see. Briefly choose deep teal or blue to inspect the outline, then return to white before saving.

A colored fringe around hair can come from the old background mixed into edge pixels. Changing the output color alone does not restore those pixels. A better-lit original with more separation from the backdrop often helps; difficult edges may need a manual editor.

Choose the right source photo

Use an evenly lit portrait with the head and shoulders fully in frame. Avoid motion blur and a background that closely matches clothing. Clearcut works on JPG, PNG and WebP up to 15 MB, with a maximum decoded size of 40 megapixels. Export HEIC to JPG first. Output is limited to 2,048 pixels on the longest side.

Does this make a passport or ID photo?

No compliance check is performed. A white background alone does not establish that a photograph meets an agency’s rules for framing, lighting, dimensions or permitted editing. This tool is intended for ordinary portrait graphics; follow the receiving organization’s instructions for official submissions.

Need the portrait for several designs?

Save a second version with a transparent background so you can place it over different designs later. For a finished white image, make sure White is selected when you download. The tool creates a new PNG; it does not overwrite the source photo.
